Suggested Activities for students yet to return to school.
Support for Gaeilge: Cúla4 ar Scoil will broadcast on TG4 Monday to Thursday at 10 a.m. commencing on 31 August 2020 and continuing until December 2020. The programme will also be available as Catch Up on the TG4 Player (TG4.ie). The programme will follow a specific theme each week, which will be the central thread for that week. The weekly theme will be published in advance on the Cúla4 Facebook page. Each lesson will have specific educational outcomes, and will be presented in an engaging and entertaining style. The programmes will also offer an opportunity to hear a rich range of Irish language dialects from various Gaeltacht areas. This could be used to support pupils who will be learning at home or could also be a valuable resource in the classroom. The programme will include the core subjects of the curriculum-: Irish, Mathematics, History and Geography, with an emphasis also on creativity, STEAM subjects, the arts, the environment, and general health and wellbeing. In addition to being available to view in full on the TG4 player, the programme segments will also be available to view individually on the Cúla4 YouTube Channel, under the Cúla4 ar Scoil Playlists. This will be an additional resource for teachers, to incorporate bitesize video clips into the classroom to enrich lesson content. https://www.youtube.com/c/Cula4/playlists.

LAST TWO WEEKS OF SCHOOL
Dear Parents and Students,
I am writing this on Friday morning, as I envisage being extremely busy from Monday onward, following the publication of the much anticipated guidelines for the phased re-opening of schools in the new term later today.
We have planned some schoolwork for each day, but as explained in our previous post, we understand that everyone is getting very tired and lacking motivation. Try and do as much as you can girls- keeping up with your core subjects of English, Irish and Maths is very important. There is a daily well-being task being uploaded by teachers every day and we have also provided a fun activity that can be done each day, especially if the weather is a bit miserable! You can find those activities here- June Activities Block 2
In terms of the re-opening of the school for the school year 2020/21, it is impossible to say how things will look until the Department distribute their guidelines. Discussions will have to take place with all stakeholders, including the BOMs and principals of the other two schools on the campus. We will be in touch as soon as we know any information.
I am planning final Zoom assemblies with all classes on Friday 26th June and will be in touch with details over the next week.
I hope you are all keeping well.
With my very best wishes,
Ms Lorna Greene
School Principal

JUNE SCHOOL WORK
Dear Parents and Students,
We are now entering the last month of the 2019/20 school year, and it's hard to believe that the last time we saw one another was 12th March 2020. Normally, during the last month of the school year we engage in lots of exciting activities such a School Tours, Sports Days, trips to Albert College Park, outdoor reading groups, GAA matches and rugby blitzes to name a few. All of these things happen while we are still engaging with our learning in the classrooms. It is always a really fun time of the year to be in school.
Students, we know you have all been working so hard at home since we closed our doors on 12th March, but we also know it can be a struggle at times to get motivated to work. So, for the month of June we are going to make things a little easier for you. The staff have continued to work very hard as a team while we’ve been closed, and we have prepared some really fun activities for you to complete over the next few weeks.
Every day you will be asked to complete a small bit of English, Irish and Maths because we need you to keep up with those subjects in particular- we call those your ‘core subjects’. We also want you to keep doing the daily well-being task that is being set by a different teacher each day, because your well-being is more important than ever. And finally, each teacher has set a fun activity for the whole school to do each day, so families and friends can try them out together. They will cover all the other subjects in the curriculum, but they will be suggesting fun things like visiting a museum online, doing hands-on activities etc. So, you will still be learning, but in a very different way than usual. We hope this makes things a little easier for you as the sunny days go by, as we move towards the end of this school year.
Parents and students, below you will see ONE document for EACH OF THE CLASSES (with the exception of 3rd class where there is a separate document for Ms Brennan's maths group, and some support materials). All of the work that we are suggesting you complete in English, Irish and Maths is contained within the one document, and it has been organised into days.
You will also see ONE document for the WHOLE SCHOOL. This document contains all the different activities that you will see mentioned in the class plans. IN case you don't have a printer, we have also created a dedicated page for these activities here- June Activities Block 1. These activities will cover all other subjects in the curriculum over the next few weeks. We will continue with this style of planning for the last two weeks of June. As always, we are aware that every home is as unique as each child in our school, and there are many families that are going through difficult times at the moment. However, we would encourage all the children to engage in some school work each day.
As you have probably heard, the Department of Education is due to publish guidelines in two weeks, outlining what will be involved in the 'phased reopening of schools'. I was very happy to hear Leo Varadkar announce on Friday, that they currently plan to reopen schools at the end of August. As soon as I know anything further about what that might mean for your daughter I will be in touch.
Kind regards,
Ms Lorna Greene

Clarification re Zoom Assemblies and Class Meetings
5th Class Parents:
There appears to have been some confusion around the 5th class Zoom meetings this morning. No child can be admitted to a Zoom meeting without signed contracts from parents and students. It is very important that children do not give Zoom meeting codes and passwords to other children, as their parents may not wish them to join Zoom meetings.
1. If you did not answer our parent survey, we do not have your email address and so therefore we did not send you the Zoom contract. We have asked you to complete the survey a number of times over the last few days. Please do so immediately so if you would like your child to be included in future Zoom calls- http://www.olvgns.ie/surveys.html.
2. Parents who answered the school survey were sent an email with the Zoom contract, to the address you provided . Please check SPAM/JUNK/TRASH folders. If you find it in one of these folders, mark the message as NOT SPAM/JUNK/TRASH and it should move to your inbox, and you will not miss any future emails we send. If it did not arrive in any folder, please What's App your email address to the school phone 0861805158 and we will get everything sorted out in time for the next meeting.
3. If you received an email with the Zoom contract, signed and emailed it but did not receive a zoom link, please check your SPAM/JUNK/TRASH folder. If you find it in one of these folders, mark the message as NOT SPAM/JUNK/TRASH and it should move to your inbox, and you will not miss any future emails we send. If it did not arrive in any folder, please What's App your email address to the school mobile 0861805158 and we will get everything sorted out in time for the next meeting.
There will be more meetings over the next few weeks and these are all teething problems we can sort out. Please be patient as there is a huge amount of administration involved for Ms Durnin and myself.

4th, 3rd and 2nd class parents- we will be in touch very soon about Zoom meetings planned for next week and early the following week.
We have very specific wording that families need to use in order to agree with our 'contract' and a dedicated email address set up to deal with them, so please do not send them to the school email address, as it only confuses things. We will be in touch very shortly.

Plans for 2020/21 School Year
Dear Parents,
As you know we were informed a number of weeks ago that we would be reopening on a phased basis in September or October 2020. To date, we have not been given any information whatsoever what that ‘phased reopening’ will look like. As there is so much uncertainty at this time and we do not know how next year will work logistically yet, we are planning as best we can at this time. As soon as I am certain of staffing for the 2020/21 school year, I will be in touch with details of your daughter’s class teacher for the 2020/21 school year. Please note, this decision may have to wait until late in the summer.
Please do not worry that your child will have missed out on work or be behind in any way. We made a decision as a staff not to organise a collection of school books last week, as we feel we will be working on this year’s curriculum for a number of weeks on our return, before moving on to next year’s curriculum. We will take the children in to school and see where they are academically and what they need. We will buy the materials that we see fit as being most suitable at that time. Along with buying books and copies for pupils, we predict that we will be using a lot of “one use only items” and most paperwork for use in school and home will be photocopied. This is a health and safety measure that we feel is necessary to ensure both you, your child and the staff here are working in the safest environment possible.
This is a most unusual circumstance we all find ourselves in and I want to assure you that the staff and I are working hard to make the transition back into school life as easy as we possibly can for your child. You will receive a school report this year in June as usual, but it will look different to the usual layout, as we can’t administer standardised tests this year. They have been cancelled by the Department of Education.
As you are aware, we operate a book rental scheme here at school where the school buys the books, copies, online materials and supplementary materials for the children. Costs also include art/craft/photocopying and personal insurance for the year. As is normal at this time of year, we are informing you that school fees of €125 per pupil are now due for the next school year. This year we have introduced an online payments system using Databiz Solutions. Please visit the school website at http://www.olvgns.ie/online-payments.html to set up your account and make payment as soon as possible. If you need to make payments in instalments (e.g. 5 X €25) please get in touch with the school, as a significant reduction of €2.50 per transaction is applied, and we may need to discuss cash payments.
If you have queries about book rental costs, please get in touch. We can also put you in touch with organisations that can help with the cost of education such as Vincent De Paul or you may be eligible to claim the Back to School allowance. Emails and text messages will be forwarded regularly (as set up on system) for outstanding fees or balances owed. If we find that, at the end of this coming school year that there is funding left we may be in a position to reduce costs for the following year –will have to wait and see.
As you know Pat O Farrell Schoolwear is our school tracksuit provider. We will inform you by text/email when O’Farrell’s reopen and have stock in store. We also have a number of tracksuits left in the school stock that we will hopefully be able to sell prior to reopening, with the remaining embroidered jumpers we have in stock- we will be in touch with dates. We usually wear tracksuits on Tuesdays and Fridays, but as of yet we haven’t made any decisions about PE days next year.
Please continue to check emails from us for updates and messages. This will now be the main method of communication between us. Please notify us also if your mobile text number or home address has changed. In the meantime, stay safe and well, and I looking forward to seeing you again soon.
Kind regards,
Lorna Greene

Monday 18th May 2020
Dear Parents,
This morning you will see below the work set for each class level from 18th – 29th May. For SPHE we ask that all the girls engage in the Well-being daily task that will be uploaded each day by one of the teachers- sisters might like to work on things together. Please make sure the girls are checking my blog and their class blogs every day.
We are aware from our phone calls to families that some parents are concerned about the ‘progress’ their daughters are making. Please do not worry that your daughter will have missed out on work or be behind in any way. When we return to school in September/October (in whatever form that will be) we will see where they are academically and what they need. The most important thing you can do for your daughter at the moment is to keep her well emotionally and physically, keep reading with her and talking to her and leave the rest to us on her return to school.
We are also aware that there have been a number of bereavements in families and I would like to offer our sincere condolences at this difficult time. If we can be of assistance in any way, please don’t hesitate to get in touch on 0861805158, even if it is just to lend a listening ear.
Stay well and safe.

To all our wonderful girls and their families......we miss you!
A special message for our Confirmation Girls
Girls,
We know that today was supposed to by a very exciting day for you, finishing off all the preparations for your Confirmation ceremony tomorrow. The school would have been a hive of activity today- trips across to the church with the choir for last minute practices, getting the art organised and preparing the hall for the cup of tea we would have been having together afterwards. I'm so sad for you that instead you are at home, away from your friends and teachers and wondering about how all of this is going to work out.
I have no doubt at all that Fr Frank and Jo will get a plan of action ready for you as soon they are given the guidelines from Archbishop's House. In the meantime, it's important that you keep up with your Confirmation project at home and continue to attend mass remotely. On that note, I got a very special message from Fr Frank and Jo to give to you today. There will be a special mass said just for you on Sunday and our church has recently install a camera, so you will be able to watch it live!
Make sure you are up bright and early on Sunday to virtually attend this special mass.
Here is the very special message from Fr Frank and Jo:
A message for our Confirmation Children:
This weekend we are thinking especially of our Children who were due to be
confirmed on Saturday the 9 th of May. Our hearts and thoughts are very much with you at
this time. We know that your Confirmation was something that you were looking forward
to very much and we understand that you all very disappointed.
Some of you were expecting members of your extended family to travel from
abroad so that they could be with you at this special moment and important time in your
young lives. Lots of plans have had to be put on hold. It is not easy. It is very difficult at this
time for us all but especially for yourselves during this weekend. We think of all the things
we were planning to do with our friends, our families, our wonderful teachers, the parish
staff as part of your special day.
This weekend once again you have been asked to be make a very big sacrifice for the
benefit and good health of all our people. Don’t forget a good Christian, a true Christian is
someone who is willing to make a sacrifice for others. Today you are doing just that. What a
wonderful witness you are to your faith and to all around you at this time.
We in Our Lady of Victories will be having a special mass on Sunday the 10th at 10 am
which can be followed on our webcam at olv.ie. Do join us by logging in. In the meantime
stay in contact with your friends and pass the word. Sunday 10 at 10

A message from Fr Frank and Jo for our 2nd and 6th Class pupils
Our Lady of Victories church,
Ballymun Road,
Glasnevin
Dublin 9
To all our Children, Parents, Guardians.
Dear Boys and Girls
Not so long ago we gathered for some lovely celebrations in preparation for your Confirmation on the 9th of May and for your First Holy Communion on the 7th of June. It is looking more likely that these Sacraments will now not take place as planned. I know that you will all be disappointed as we are here in the Parish. It is important however for us all that we follow the government guidelines.
As soon as restrictions are lifted, we will see what we are allowed to do and hopefully we can celebrate our Confirmation and First Holy Communion during the summer months. As large gatherings will probably not be allowed for a long time, we may have to have a number of Masses for smaller groups. We are very flexible and we will do all that we can to facilitate you and your families.
Like yourselves we must follow the guidelines set down by our government. We know that it is a big sacrifice that we all have to make but we do it for the health of all our people. We are keeping in touch with your principals and hopefully when things improve we will come up with the best possible plan.
In the meantime may you and all your families stay safe and keep well.
God bless

School Closure 20th April
Dear Parents,
I hope you managed to celebrate Easter as best you could in the circumstances. As you know schools have been closed by the government ‘until further notice’. The decision to re-open the schools can only be made when the National Public Health Emergency Team deem it safe to do so, so all we can do is wait and see unfortunately.
We will continue to work hard to ensure we are supporting your daughter as best we can during this time. Today we have uploaded new plans of work for each class level (see below). The work that has been set should be completed to each child’s level of ability- if they are finding something too tricky after genuinely attempting it, skip it! Within each class in the school there is a hugely diverse range of abilities. It would be an unsustainable task to set separate work for individual students, as we just don’t know how long we are going to be in this situation.
I’ve been reading so many social media posts about families, ‘home-schooling’ and anxiety and how this is a point in history we will never forget. The messages and posts that resonate with me are those that refer to what children will remember when they look back on this time. My wish for the children from OLV Girls school is that they remember a time when their family became a stronger unit. That they will remember being taught new things by their parents- how to make dinner, how to paint a door, how to plant seeds, how to play a card game, how to sew/knit etc. So please use this time wisely with your children- we will never have this opportunity again.
As you know, our main priority for our wonderful students during this time is their well-being. I would hate to think that the pressure of completing school work is having a negative impact on your household during these already difficult days. If completing the work that has been set is causing excess stress or anxiety, I would urge you not to force the issue. We have added a new ‘online resources’ section to our website where you will find endless recommendations of websites and apps that the children can engage with as an addition to the work set or, if they are finding something too tricky, instead of the work set- you know your child best, so you can decide.
Please know that the staff of OLV Girls’ School are here to support you and your family in whatever way we can. If you need to contact me or any of the staff please do not hesitate to get in touch. The mobile number is 0861805158 (calls and What’s App only) and the email address is [email protected]. The children can send their teachers a message on their blog pages on the school website. A reminder that the blog posts are public, so any private queries should be made through the school email or by calling the mobile.
I sincerely hope we will be seeing each other again in the not too distant future. Until then, I wish you and your family all the very best,
Kind regards,

Thursday 26th March 2020
Dear Parents,
I hope you and your families are keeping well during these strange and worrying times. We in Our Lady of Victories Girls’ School will continue to support your families as best we can over the coming weeks.
Whilst our main focus is always on education, during this unprecedented time our priority is your daughter’s health and well-being. We are acutely aware of the struggles all families are going through at the moment, and we do not want you or your children to feel stressed, overwhelmed or under pressure by the work we have suggested the girls complete at home.
We do feel that in order to keep the children in some sort of a routine, and to give them something to focus on, other than what’s going on in the world right now, it is important that the children engage in some sort of school work every day. The teachers have planned work up to 3rd April- this is available at the bottom of this page. They are collaborating over the next few days to prepare work from 20th April onwards, in case of a prolonged closure.
We have redesigned our website to include the option for your daughter to contact her teachers. Under the ‘Class Blogs’ section each teacher can be contacted via the ‘comment’ form on their blog page. If you need to contact the teacher about a private matter, please email me directly on [email protected] and I can pass on the message or enquiry. I would encourage you to allow your daughter to contact their teacher. It will help her to reconnect and feel some small sense of normality again. I have also moved my daily messages to the 'Class Blogs' section so the girls can comment on them, or to just drop a little note to say hello to a very lonely principal!
We are also developing a specific ‘Well-being’ section of the website for the girls to engage with.
I will continue to put up challenges for the girls throughout the ‘Easter Holidays’, but a bit of down time from academics won’t do anyone any harm for those couple of weeks!
At the end of the day, you know your children best, and if you feel that a day or two off school work is what they (or you!) need, please don’t feel guilty about that. I would encourage you to limit your child’s access to social media as much as possible at the moment, and also to minimise their exposure to the news.
The Minister for Education wrote to all school principals to ask us to stress the importance of ‘flattening the curve’ to our students and their families. We all want to be back in school sooner rather than later, so please ensure you and your family are not meeting up with people you don’t live with. The girls should not be going out to meet their friends (unless they are being supervised by an adult to ensure they are staying the minimum of 2 meters away from each other). Never in my wildest dreams, did I ever think I would be typing those words to you, but please adhere to the social distancing and hand washing guidelines.
Myself and all the staff miss your daughters very much- they are a huge part of our lives and it is so hard for us not to be there in person to help them navigate through these worrying times. Please look after yourselves, stay indoors and we will all see each other again very soon, please God.
Kind regards,
Ms Lorna Greene

Dear Parents,
At the bottom of the page, you will find work for your child's class level. We had anticipated being asked to close for three weeks, and have prepared enough work for your child to complete up to the Easter holidays. As you know we are currently closed until Sunday 29th March. Please ensure your child works through the first two weeks of work for now, if we need to remain shut for the week of the 30th March, the work is here ready for the children.
Please ensure the children are working without the distraction of phones, televisions or radios. I was speaking to them all yesterday and explained that they need to behave as they do in school while doing their work- phones should be turned off in a drawer, all their materials they need should be close at hand and they should take plenty of movement breaks. There is enough work set for the children to be working for approximately 3-4 hours per day. If there are any issues with any of the work that has been set, please assure your child their teacher will understand. However, we do expect every child to make an effort to complete everything.
As soon as I know anything further in relation to the closures and if we will need to make time up in Easter/Summer holidays I will let you know. For now I wish you all the very best, and ask you to limit your child's social interactions as much as possible. As a daughter of a parent with very severe lung issues and an asthma sufferer myself, I know these are anxious times, however with sensible proactive behaviour I have no doubt, we will persevere and get through to the other side.
All my best wishes,
Ms Lorna Greene
