Presidential Election in Room 9

5/11/2018

The Presidential Election was held on the 26th October to decide who would be the next president of Ireland. Irish citizens over the age of 18 who were registered were allowed to vote. We had been learning a bit about the upcoming election in school so we decided to cast our own election in Room 9. We realised that by the time the next presidential election rolled around (in seven years time, 2025) that we would be eligible to vote so to practice would do us no harm!

We filled out our voting cards independently, ordering our preferences from 1 to 6. As you can see our votes seemed to match those of the general public and Michael D. Higgins is our president for the next seven year term. Comhghairdeas to Michael D!!!

All our talk about the role of the president and how they represent us as a country got us thinking and we decided to create the role of Class President. The candidates put forward their thoughts and ideas, of what would make them a suitable candidate to their follow classmates. The girls did a fabulous job with their public speaking, it was very impressive!

The girls casted their votes and we actually came to a tie between Crystal and Naoise. We casted our votes once more which put Crystal as our Class President and Naoise as our Vice. I explained to the girls that this role is similar to that of a Class Representative in secondary school, which is something that they may want to pursue next year.
